Real Cider and Perry

Real cider and perry

What is Real Cider?

Real cider is something that is made of natural ingredients using traditional methods. It does not contain artificial sweeteners or chemicals, it has not been pasturised to kill-off the character nor has it been artificially carbonated. Cider, as in "real cider" has become very scarce indeed, much more so than real ale in fact whilst Perry, like cider but made using special "perry pears", is under dire threat of extinction.

Where can we get real cider or perry in and around Bedfordshire?

In Ampthill, the Albion sells Westons Old Rosie two others, usually from Westons. They regularly have cider festivals with ciders served from the separate bar in the courtyard garden.

In Dunstable, The Globe sells Westons Old Rosie cider on hand pump, plus Westons Herefordshire Country Perry, while the Gary Cooper sells Westons Old Rosie and/or Vintage Organic, whereas The Pheasant also has two regularly changing ciders.

Whereas, Leighton Buzzard seems to be the rising star with real cider. It has the Black Lion which has been the South Beds Branch cider pub of the year for several years running. They sell eight ever changing real ciders from around the country and hold a massive cider festival every July. Also in Leighton Buzzard, The Bald Buzzard Alehouse, Red Lion, Swan Hotel and Buckingham Arms serve real ciders as does the Golden Bell but only in the summer time. The Leighton Buzzard Brewing Co. Brewery Tap usually has real cider from the local Woughton Orchard.

Real cider outlets in Luton are: the Bricklayers Arms, Brewery Tap, Castle, Crown, George II and Great Northern.

In Shillington the Noahs Ark stocks Westons Old Rosie.

In Toddington, the Cuckoo and Oddfellows Arms has Westons Old Rosie cider.

The Old Farm Inn in Totternhoe serves real ciders.

Elsewhere in Bedfordshire

This pub is also regularly CAMRA’s Bedfordshire county Cider Pub of the Year thanks to their support for local cider producers. For North Bedfordshire and elsewhere go to WhatPub and search using the Real Cider tick box.
